Wheel of Colonisation
- The wheel was published by Lea Jovy, founder of Mission Different and Mission Equality, in September 2024.
- The outer circle is intended to be an ‘end state’ of what being decolonised – and living in a fully decolonised ecosystem – might be like.
- The wheel is not designed to incorporate any parts of the ‘process’ of moving from Colonised to Decolonised; it’s intended to be a depiction of the current state (colonised) and a different state (decolonised).
- Because the wheel wasn’t designed to include the process of moving from one state to another, it does not incorporate concepts that many decolonial practitioners recognise such as Land Back, repatriation, reparations and more. This does not mean we deny the necessity of these; on the contrary, we view these as fundamental steps on the path to equality and part of the process of change. The diagram is simply not designed to represent the process and instead depicts the start and end points.
- The elements in the outer circle are included on the premise and assumption that the systemic and societal change we need to see are the foundations that facilitate and uphold these ways of being in a decolonised system.
